The prickly branches of a native lime bush poke throughout this painting – but this is the native habitat where the life cycle of the Dainty Swallowtail Butterfly takes place. Eggs, a caterpillar, two camouflaged chrysalis, a butterfly that has just emerged and is hanging to dry its wings, and at the top of the painting, a butterfly that has just taken off for its first flight.
